CHAPTER 10

The icy fist that had gripped his gut the minute Stacy sat down hadn’t let go, even though she’d left the table.

He hadn’t heard the first few words she’d said because the last ones she’d uttered all those years ago had roared in his head together with the memory of the disgust on her face.

What sort of creepy pervert are you?

She’d been nice enough, just now. Civil. Smiling. But he’d detected a tinge of sarcasm in her voice. A hint of “I know what you’re really like” in her eyes as they’d shared innocuous small talk.

Sure, they’d both been young then. Barely out of their teens when they’d finally given in to the attraction that had simmered for years. He hadn’t understood anything about his kink and presumed it was part of everyone’s sexual make-up.

He’d learned quickly that wanting to feel and hear his hand landing on a rounded bare ass wasn’t ‘normal’. She’d threatened to tell her parents, his mother, the whole damn town that Tyler Bedford was a sexual deviant.

The last he’d seen of Stacey McPherson was her retreating back as she ran out of the hayshed, pulling down her denim skirt with one hand, sneakers in the other hand.

Thankfully she’d only blabbed to a few of her friends, but that had been enough for word to get around and unkind comments to be flung in his direction about his uneducated foray into kink, but a constant tight fist of anxiety had clenched his belly for months afterward, just waiting for someone to say something. For his name, and his family’s to be brought into disrepute. But not long after Stacey had gone overseas for a gap year, and Ty had felt like a prisoner let out of jail.

Until she’d sat down beside him.

That old familiar fist had clenched his gut again. Even though now he was a man who embraced his particular needs without shame and no longer feared small town gossip for himself, he didn’t need the Bedford name dragged through the mud again.

They’d had more than enough of that when his dad did the dirty on his wife and sons, leaving them to fend for themselves. He’d seen the shame and embarrassment his mother had endured, and now he feared Stacey would drag up the past and bring them back into that dark place again.

She hadn’t alluded to anything when she’d chatted to him, but there’d been a glint of something in her eyes. Had fifteen years softened her attitude? Or did she still see him as deviant?

‘Earth to Tyler.’ Molly’s voice roused him from his thoughts as she sat beside him. ‘Contemplating the meaning of life? You were miles away.’

‘I’m back now.’ He couldn’t help but smile. Molly was the perfect antidote for worry. She obviously hadn’t wanted to intrude on his reunion with an old friend and he’d felt adrift in a sea of the unknown when she’d left the table.

‘Did you want another dance?’ She looked over at the couples moving into close holds as the band drifted into another slow tune.
